Beyond Silicon Valley: Growing Entrepreneurship in Transitioning Economies

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Professor Michael Goldberg is recruiting a special cohort from the Canary Islands to participate in his Beyond Silicon Valley course starting at the end of August 2021. Professor Goldberg launched Beyond Silicon Valley on Coursera in April 2014 and it has attracted over 175,000 students from 190 countries over the past 5 years. Beyond Silicon Valley has been translated into 16 languages (most on Coursera platform).

In 2018, Professor Goldberg was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to work on building remote entrepreneurial ecosystems with Asociación Canaria de Startups, Empresas de Base Tecnológica e Inversores Ángeles (Emerge). Emerge belongs to the Canarian Network of Innovation and Business Development Centers (CIDE Network) funded by the Government of the Canary Islands. It manages two co-working spaces for innovators in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palet Express – Cajasiete and Marine Park, and it coordinates the Task Force Seizing New Growth Opportunities: Canarias / Israel Innovation Partnership.

We are recruiting Canarians interested in the topic of supporting the growth of entrepreneurship to participate in this free course. This might include entrepreneurs, investors, students and business leaders. Students will watch the Beyond Silicon Valley videos online on their own and will come together for live discussions via Zoom during the semester to discuss various topics with guest speakers from around the world.

Live discussions will take place on selected Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4:15PM (final dates forthcoming) Canary Island time during the CWRU fall semester which runs from August 24 until December 3. Sessions will be recorded for students that are not able to attend the live discussions.

To get the most out of the experience, we expect students to complete course assignments alongside the CWRU students and attend as many of the live sessions as possible.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out this application form. Professor Goldberg will review the applications with a team of collaborators in the Canary Islands to select the participants for the cohort. Applications are accepted throughout the semester.
